What I've Learned From My Social Media Audit

As entrepreneurs, we often fall into the trap of doing what feels comfortable or what we’ve always done in our marketing. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a LinkedIn strategist, it’s this: Your marketing decisions should be based on data, not feelings.

When I made that shift in my business, it was truly transformative.

For the past 3 weeks, I decided to lay off of social media. The few pieces of content shared were created before the holidays. I spent time with family, I'm working on a client's LinkedIn company page that I would like to put a bow on and I wanted to audit my own marketing. I came to the following conclusions.

It's time to stop streaming my weekly LinkedIn Lives on Facebook.

Why? The numbers told me it was no longer working. Despite showing up consistently on Facebook, I received zero inquiries from the platform last year unless I ran an ad. Organic reach? Practically non-existent. The one exception is Facebook Groups, but even there, I found more tire-kicking than true interest.

The decision wasn’t just about saving time—it was about ensuring every effort in my marketing had a tangible return. So, I’ve scaled back on Facebook, maintaining just enough presence with a couple of posts per week to keep my page active. Instead, I’ve doubled down on platforms that deliver results, like LinkedIn, where my target audience is engaged, ready to learn, and willing to take action.

The Freedom of Letting Go

Last summer, I also experimented with stepping away from Instagram for two months. You know what happened? My business grew. I focused solely on LinkedIn and only returned to Instagram when it was time to promote my November in-person LinkedIn workshop, my LinkedIn online bootcamp and my new monthly membership Content LAB. They all sold out.

That experience showed me the power of strategic effort versus constant effort. Now, Instagram is part of my marketing strategy, but in a way that feels intentional, not exhausting.

The Cost of Avoiding an Audit

When we don’t take the time to audit our marketing efforts, we risk wasting time, energy, and money on platforms and strategies that no longer serve us. We’re left spinning our wheels, wondering why we’re not seeing results. Worse, we miss opportunities to focus on what does work.

For me, auditing my marketing has meant identifying what’s worth my time and what’s not.

Facebook organic posting? Minimal results.

YouTube? A growth opportunity!

I’m now creating videos under seven minutes to expand my reach and even tap into monetization potential.
